April 13th, 2007Macbook or Windows Laptop? Your opinion plz!!
So I’m thinking about buying a laptop sometime soon. I’d really like to have my pc with me at all times anywhere I go. Plus, it’ll be great for me to use for school too. Now I’m stuck with a decision: Macbook or Windows? I’m leaning towards a Macbook because I love the design and I hear you have less problems with it than you would with Windows. I have used a mac computer before, so I know how the desktop and controls are slightly different from the windows operating system.
Now my question is, what should I get? Macbook or a Windows laptop? If any of you have a Macbook, I’d really like to hear about your experience with it. Any errors or complications? Loading times? etc. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I think people don’t give Windows enough credit. I’ve pretty much never had problems with my computers that have windows. But then again, i take care of my computer, I have antivirus running every two days, i do spyware searching every two days. I don’t load worthless internet programs on them and I make sure I keep it defragmented and disk clean up on occasion.
I kind of look at my computer like my room, if my room is clean then I won’t have any problems, but if my room is dirty then i’m likely to trip over something and hurt myself, or it’s going to take me longer to find something, or I might just end up sitting in my corner and crying because I have bugs from leftover food I left on the desk.
*throws hands up* If taken care of properly then a windows PC will do just fine.
But then again, i heard Macs are good for people using video intensive programs or photograph applications.

Hi Tina,
You left me a message on my website asking about my MacBook. The MacBook Pros are all metallic (silver) in color. The one I got - the white one - is the MacBook. The current models of MacBooks come with a 1.83GHz or 2.0 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, anywhere from 512 MB to 2 GB of RAM memory, a 60 GB to 200 GB hard drive, and a Combo Drive or Super Drive Dual-Layer, (Combo = reads DVDs, burns CDs / Super = burns DVDs [including Dual layer ones] and CDs). That all to say, that these machines are pretty strong machines, even though they are considered the “consumer model” - aka they are the cheaper ones. They all come with built-in WiFi, BlueTooth, USB, FireWire, iSight (the web-cam), Microphones, FrontRow (a remote control), etc..
The MacBook I have is the base model of the original release. So my MacBook isn’t even that powerful. However, it can run OS X, iTunes, iLife, iWork, MS Office, Firefox, GIMPShop, Audacaity, etc. just fine. I even have Parallels Desktop (which I highly recommend, it’s only $79 I think) so I can run Windows XP on top of OS X, and Linux too - (I’m a Kubuntu fan, myself). So if you got a new MacBook, your machine would be more powerful - especially if you upgraded it at all . I would recommend getting the SuperDrive and at least 1 GB of RAM - so I guess I’m saying go for the 2.0 GHz $1,299 white model.
Especially since you told me you already like White - I’d say stick with the white model. The Black model is $200 more, and the only upgrade you get (other than color) is a slightly bigger hard drive - which you can add to the white MacBook for $150 - so you’re paying $50 for a black case instead of a white case. (In the first generation of MacBooks, it was a 80 GB HD instead of a 60, and the upgrade was only $50 - so you were paying $150 for a paintjob - if I remember correctly.)
The MacBook Pros, on the other hand, are more powerful. They start with a slightly more powerful processor (2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo instead of the 2.0 Ghz one on the MB), they can hold more RAM, (although the cheapest one starts with the 1 GB that the 2.0 Ghz MB starts with), and they have bigger screens with better graphics. The SuperDrives are also faster, and they have things like FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 - which, if you don’t know what they are, or what the difference is - it obviously doesn’t matter to you that they have them. But the thing is - they cost almost $1000 more - they are heavier and bigger (because the screens are bigger) - and he power jump isn’t all that much, unless you are big into graphics (play a lot of games, do a lot of detailed graphic design, video editing, etc.).
That’s what I’ve got. I love my MacBook - it was the best choice I could have made at the time (I just wish I had spent the extra $200 to get the better processor/RAM/SuperDrive.) Oh, one more thing - don’t buy it from an Apple Store or from Apple.com - buy it from Amazon.com - they usually have rebates/discounts - so you can save $75 - $200 there, and they don’t charge sales tax, which on $1099 or more can be a lot of money - like $100 or more. And they also offer free shipping, just like Apple does. What I did was sign up for the free trial period of Amazon Prime, and ended up getting it shipped 2nd day air for free, which was nice. And, at the time, they were giving a 1.57% discount for using their browser toolbar, but I don’t think they offer that anymore. But you can at least save sales tax, and right now they are offering a $75 rebate on the $1,299 model.

Anyway, there ya go. Whatever you decide, I hope you have fun with your new laptop!
